Autumn on Tangier Sound

3 12 2017

Sorry I haven’t posted much but I’ve been on the water a lot, and by the time I get home the computer screen is just a blur. I often take the easy way out and simply post photos on my Facebook @JosenhansFlyFishing and Instagram @KevinJosenhans accounts. Please check out all my social media sites for current fishing reports. A picture really is worth a thousand words.

We’ve enjoyed a fantastic fall, fishing for stripers and speckled trout out of Crisfield. Shallow water action was great around Smith and Tangier Islands casting DOA CAL Shad Tails in Pearl or chartreuse colors. I can’t begin to tell you how much I love the DOA 4-inch Shad tail, especially for larger stripers. The action is extremely lifelike at slow or higher retrieve speeds. Attach to a 3/8 or 1/2 ounce DOA Premium Jig Head and you have my go-to rockfish bait. Check it out at http://www.doalures.com

Enjoy some of my favorite shots of Autumn on Tangier Sound, with a few bonus pics out of Madison on the Little Choptank.

August Breakers! – Walk On Opening

9 08 2016

Leaving from Madison on the Little Choptank we are enjoying excellent fly and light tackle angling with breaking stripers and bluefish. Spanish mackerel are around as well. While I am currently fully booked for August I do have one open walk on date for a six hour trip. I need one angler to share the cost on Tuesday, August 16. The trip will run from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Cost is $225 and includes license, tackle, ice and cold drinks. Contact Kevin at kjosenhans@aol.com or 443-783-3271 if interested.

The Fat Lady has Sung

15 05 2016

The game is over, for this season’s southern Chesapeake adventure, at least. While we certainly enjoyed our share of exciting moments chasing bull reds and trophy stripers on the lower bay flats, the weather was not our friend. Cool temperatures, dirty water and more east wind than you’d see during a tropical storm, all made for difficult sight-fishing conditions. ‘Boom or Bust’ is how I’d best describe the action. Still, when after what seems like a thousand casts you finally hook that behemoth drum, and she begins peeling 30# braid from the reel at an alarming clip, the wait is long forgotten. Or, as the boat is surrounded by 40-plus inch stripers who continue to ignore your near perfect presentations, when finally a monster inhales your offering and the battle is on, the wait is long forgotten. As one client aptly described it, after experiencing a mild case of buck fever, “this is not fishing, but trophy big game hunting!” Thanks to all my clients for your patience and perseverance, both those who succeeded and those who did not. This fishery will test the mettle of the most ardent angler. Therein lies the drug.

Susquehanna Flats – Take 3!

20 01 2016

Josenhans Fly Fishing is currently taking bookings for the Susquehanna Flats catch & release season that runs from March 1 through May 3. That being said, I’m only fishing April 10 through April 22, so I have a very limited number of dates available. Half, 3/4 and full day trips are available. Fishing license and top-of-the-line Sage and G.Loomis tackle is provided;  as are my custom tied flies, ice, bottled water and soft drinks. The past two flats seasons have been a washout, so let’s hope the third times the charm. There was a good number of thirty-inch rockfish in the bay this past fall, so I’m counting on their return to the spring’s pre-spawn staging grounds. When it’s right, there’s nothing like it! Contact me to discuss your trip at 443-783-3271 or kjosenhans@aol.com.

First Week at the Flats in the Books

11 04 2015

Muddy water but some very nice fish being caught. Here are our three best of the week.

Good Year for the Susquehanna Flats?

23 02 2015

While last year’s Susquehanna Flats catch and release season surely tried the patience of even the most passionate flats aficionado, I look for better things to come as this spring approaches. Here’s my reasoning. This past fall saw a pretty good run of striped bass in Maryland’s mid and lower bay. Beginning in mid-September, Tangier Sound and the bay proper along with the shallows surrounding the bay islands of Tangier, Smith, South Marsh, Holland, and so on, provided some of the best fly and light tackle angling for rockfish that we’ve experienced in several years. As the waters cooled, stripers gravitated towards the deeper channel edges of lower Tangier Sound, Smith Point and the mouth of the Potomac River. While the strong 2011 year class was well represented, many fish in the 28″ to 32″ category were also brought boat-side. These bigger males should begin returning to the spawning grounds in March, and I have to believe many of the 2011 fish, which should be approaching twenty inches or better, will tag along and fill in the gaps. There is always the chance of a true trophy of 40-inches, or more. All we need is some relatively clean water. Hopefully, most of the heavy snow melt gives the Susquehanna river basin a break for a change.

To that end, I will once again be trailering my Jones Brothers to Havre de Grace for this very special spring fishery. I still have a few open dates remaining during the month of April, so if you would like to get in on this fun shallow water fishery please email or call me at your earliest convenience. I can be reached at kjosenhans@aol.com or 443-783-3271.

Maryland Striped Bass YOY Results

20 10 2014

Maryland’s annual YOY (Young of Year) survey is in and the results place this year’s rockfish spawning success at just below average. This, after two years of rock-bottom (no pun intended) reproduction. Not to worry, Maryland DNR Fisheries Director Tom O’Connell says this constitutes a “healthy” year-class. I guess it depends on ones definition of healthy.

Overwhelming Response to Walk On Trips!

18 10 2014

IMG_3987.JPG Due to the large number of calls and emails that I have received requesting a spot for my walk-on trips I have decided to open up a few more November dates in an effort to accommodate as many of you as possible. I now have available November 19, 20, 21 & 24. In addition, I need a single angler to share a full day (8 hour) trip on Friday, November 14th. Also, on any one of the latter dates, I need a single angler to share a half day (4 hour) trip. Please call or email me for details. This is it for November, and while I do plan on running trips in December, you just never know what to expect with the weather. Thanks again for your overwhelming response!!

Flats Update

18 04 2014

High, muddy water persists.

Due to the latest rains I have canceled the remainder of this weeks trips. However, I am going to give it one last shot next Wed – Fri. I have added three days because all of the fish that have been caught in between the downpours have been fairly nice sized fish (5-30#). I currently have one full day open and that is next Wed, April 23. I can fish 4, 6 or 8 hours. Morning or evening. I’m hoping for the best next week because there are some big fish around and the water should clear by then. If interested, I’m filling this on a first come, first serve basis. Please call ASAP if interested.
